As is true for many non-profit organizations, a challenging economic climate prompts the exploration of new and creative ways to raise funds for our mission. In 2009, one of those significant ways for Children’s Home Society (CHS) started with “Santa’s Prayer”— a Christmas story written by Tom Roberts.
We wish to thank Doug Moss for his illustrations, Insight Marketing Design for their promotional support, Maximum Graphics for their printing donations, and our sponsors. Because of their generosity, a total of 18,000 copies of Santa’s Prayer were produced in 2009 & 2010 with 100% of the sales benefiting the children at CHS.
To our delight, we had so many requests for Tom’s first book ‘Twas the Night Before Christ, that in 2010, we reprinted 3,000 copies of this book as well. Monies raised from both of these books helped provide program support for CHS in its service to children and families.
We also wish to thank all of the churches, service organizations as well as over 80 retailers and businesses who partnered with us for this effort. With their help, over 11,500 Santa’s Prayer and over 1,200 ‘Twas the Night Before Christ books were sold in the last two years netting over $280,000!
In addition to creative/production assistance, tremendous support was received from regional media partners including The Argus Leader, Backyard Broadcasting, KELOLAND TV, Midcontinent Communications, NEW Rushmore Radio and KEVN TV.

Santa’s Prayer * ’Twas The Night Before Christ * The Little Lost Sock
These books were developed for the purpose of creating a statewide awareness of the mission of the Children’s Home Society as well as financial support for the children in our care. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sales benefit the kids at Children’s Home Society of South Dakota.
Santa’s Prayer is the tale of a young boy and girl who discover Santa praying at a church nativity. What they overhear is Santa’s prayer for the children of the world. It is a prayer shared by every Christian parent . . . a prayer of hope that their children will always be mindful of and thankful for the birth of a little baby whose life and legacy has changed the world. Beautifully illustrated by Doug Moss.
‘Twas The Night Before Christ is a poetic version of the birth of Christ written by Mr. Roberts while he was stranded at a truck stop during a South Dakota blizzard. The original copies of this book sold out very quickly and prompted a reprinting of it this year to accommodate the numerous requests. Illustrated by Steve Hoffman this story has already become a family Christmas tradition in many homes and churches across the globe.
AND NOW . . . AVAILABLE FALL 2011
THE LITTLE LOST SOCK is a simple yet poignant story of hope, the power of faith, and how true friendship can make a positive difference in the life of another. Reminiscent of the tales by Hans Christian Andersen, this poetic fable is about a lonely misplaced sock searching for purpose. After an unsuccessful attempt to receive help from other lost souls, the sock finds meaning through friendship with a book – a very special book! A surprise transformation reveals the sock as much more than it had ever imagined. A heart-warming tale with wonderful illustrations by Jim Brummond. You’ll want to share it with the entire family every Christmas!

It is our hope that these stories will promote the true spirit of Christmas within families and communities wherever they are shared.
